Thanks for the visit and walk around of the Battleship USS North Carolina. I used to work at a military base that developed the guns for the battleships. While on the base, I spoke with some of the retirees who worked and served on these ships. Firing off the big guns required soundproof hearing protection; now, however, during WWII, there wasn’t much sound protection. The crew, mostly if not manning anti-aircraft guns, were below decks when the big guns fired. The ships themselves would shift 10 to 15 feet as part of the recoil from firing the big guns. Each gun would deliver the equivalent of a VW Beetle in tonnage fired at the enemy. Thanks for the visit to Wilmington and the Civil War Fort.

Thanks for the tour Russ. Your comment about getting lost made me smile...whenever I visit those big ships I always seem to get a little lost wandering around from deck to deck 🙂. Until next time, fair winds and following seas!

I've been on that battleship. Back in the early to mid 70s at the latest. Loved it. We vacationed at Long Beach, NC which is now Oak Island. Now you've got me wanting to come back there but it would be a two day drive for us. I lived in Knoxville back then.
