  I sat down, waiting for a Whale Watch in Mass, when an Amish man sat down next to me with his wife. &nbsp;He waited for about 60 seconds and then started talking to me. &nbsp;It was a simple conversation, but not superficial. &nbsp;I served in uniform, as a contractor, and as a Federal Civilian for &nbsp;28 years. &nbsp;I consulted the Secretary of Defense.<br><br>After a while, he explained that most Amish today set up shops rather than farms, as when he was a child.<br><br>Knowing a little about the Amish, I realized he was a Bishop, but he never said so.<br><br>After about 20 minutes, we got up and boarded the boat. &nbsp;<br><br>For a few days, I thought about that encounter. &nbsp;Then it dawned on me why such a simple conversation was occupying my mind so much. &nbsp;That humble old man had the aura of a 4-star general.

  Fun Facts/Common misconceptions:<br><br>One of the reasons people are staying in the community more is because many communities are embracing a more neutral and positive stance to modern technology.<br><br>In Holmes and Wayne counties, Ohio, it’s actually very common for them to use solar energy in homes, especially in new builds. It’s off grid, so it falls into self-sustainability. They’ll use electric fridges, window air conditioners and gas stoves that will still use electric as well of course.<br><br>They also are embracing smart phones and tablets for specific uses; work primarily (you’ll find this in most communities, devices most commonly being flip phones but some will use smart phones), contacting loved ones, arranging for rides with english drivers and for courier services such as Instacart, Walmart and Amazon. In fact, they use these services a LOT. Social media, of course, is still off limits for the majority of communities.<br><br>They also LOVE e-bikes. These are actually extremely common especially in areas like Fredericksburg, Apple Creek and Kidron. They usually have communal charging points, though, rather than at their homes but it’s not uncommon.<br><br>Of course, all of this varies from community to community and is heavily dependent on what the Bishop allows.<br><br>And they don’t always shun or fully disown those who leave (again, varies). My mom dated an ex Amish man when I was a child with whom we lived with for a while. We visited his families farm regularly. The women were insanely friendly and eager to teach me and my siblings all about their lives. Honestly some of the most patient and nurturing people I’ve ever met are young Amish women.

  If u ever get the chance to go to an amish supply store, GO! The quality of the products they buy is so good and you can get hard to find tools and such.

  I appreciate the frequent references to Weird Al&apos;s big hit. As far as becoming Amish, I think that&apos;s a fool&apos;s errand. It&apos;s like trying to put the jinn back in the bottle. You can&apos;t unlearn what the world taught.<br>But you can live a simpler life. That&apos;s very doable. I wouldn&apos;t pick Amish as a model, I&apos;d pick Quaker. You&apos;d be surprised at how chill they are.
