Great video with a wellspring of knowledge! If you don't mind me asking, I'm a bit confused on some points. I've been taking notes for the video structure itself and here's what I got;
1) Genre establishing shot with player gameplay [5%]
2) Unique feature / Hook [30%]
3) Explore twists on the hook / narrative [40%]
4) Non-gameplay highlights (experiment) [15%]
5) Title card [10%]

Though right at the end of the video, you said Don't front-load with anchors, but my understanding that that was necessary for the genre-establishing? Also, I'm a bit confused what you should do if you don't have a strong USP or Hook (for example, I'm making a story-lead platformer where the artstyle and 'fantasy' is the selling point). You gave some great examples in the hook segment, but I'm not sure how to turn that into actionable advice.
Thanks in advance! Keep up the amazing videos!

    One thing I really like about the Papers Please trailer is that they weren’t afraid to zoom in and crop the footage. I see so many pixel art game trailers that are hard to follow because you’re looking at the entire screen, sometimes even adding text to try to make it clearer (which muddies it even further!)

    "You can't sell something new by describing all the ways it's the same as what came before." Damn that's good advice.

    Absolute masterclass. I am actually remaking my game’s trailer now and this dropped in perfect time.

    Someone was clearly hungry when writing the script with all those mentions of ice cream shops and Chinese restaurants. :P Great video!

    This is gold. Like pure gold. Derek could have charged a $99 usd course to teach these VERY IMPORTANT things but instead he just shared all his knowledge on a perfectly concised 30 minutes video.

Derek, the words Thank You falls short.

You are another GOAT like Jonas.

    Great! This should be a mandatory watch for every new indie dev. 🙃 In summary, a trailer forces you to pitch and explain your game. And your actual game should have the substance to fulfil that pitch.

    When the guy did the verbal pitch of Dosa Divas, I thought "How can you explain all in a trailer" !
It's just impressive how you understood very well what has to be done to make the trailer clear :O

    You forgot the most important part of starting with 2 solid minutes of the camera slowly panning across empty environments while a narrator that sounds straight out of an infomercial explains the world and backstory to you.

    Youre a great presenter and speaker! Plus your editing is obviously on point, so not only us this a valuable watch, but also a fun one! Great job and thanks for the advice.
