In this powerful episode of The Jesus People Podcast, Ryan Miller sits down with Grammy-nominated worship leader and songwriter Phil Wickham for an honest conversation about worship, songwriting, surrender, spiritual freedom, and what it really means to make Jesus the Lord of your whole life. Phil shares the stories and spiritual lessons behind songs like “Living Hope,” “This Is Amazing Grace,” and his Psalm 23 adaptation, revealing how Scripture, prayer, intimacy with God, and a relentless pursuit of truth shape the songs he writes. He also opens up about how God called him into worship leading, the tension between pursuing music and pursuing ministry, dealing with praise and recognition, protecting his family from the pressures of Christian celebrity, and learning to see every person in the crowd as someone Jesus deeply loves. One of the most powerful moments comes when Phil talks about asking Jesus to be the Lord of his entire life. He shares how surrendering hidden strongholds, false beliefs, addictions, insecurity, and the need for approval opened the door to a deeper experience of freedom and abundant life in Christ. Phil also explains why worship is far more than singing on a stage. Worship can become a daily posture of surrender, gratitude, obedience, prayer, and knowing God more deeply. Phil’s new book, Everyday Hallelujah: Unlocking Deep Joy Through Everyday Acts of Worship, expands on this same message, challenging us to see worship not simply as something we sing, but as a way of life. Key Highlights: How Phil Wickham writes worship songs and finds “prism-shifting” moments in Scripture The real story behind writing Psalm 23 How “Living Hope” developed over months of songwriting Why Scripture became foundational to Phil’s songwriting How the Holy Spirit transformed worship from something he knew into Someone he could know The story of how God called Phil Wickham into worship leading The unexpected moment that changed the direction of his music career How Phil handles praise, recognition, and the temptation of Christian celebrity Protecting his family from entitlement and the pressures of ministry Why surrendering to Jesus actually leads to greater freedom Breaking free from insecurity, strongholds, false beliefs, and the need for approval What it means to confess that “Jesus is Lord” over your whole life Worship as a daily lifestyle, not simply something we do at church The connection between worship, spiritual freedom, joy, and abundant life The heart behind Phil Wickham’s book Everyday Hallelujah If you are wrestling with sin, fear, addiction, lust, pornography, insecurity, or spiritual stagnation, you do not have to walk alone.
