This footage is a true treasure. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s 1978 Harvard Address remains one of the most prophetic diagnoses of modern Western civilization.

As the Italian philosopher Augusto Del Noce understood so profoundly, Solzhenitsyn grasped earlier than many that the Western “Affluent Society” was not the real alternative to Communism, but in some respects its more advanced materialist evolution.

Where the Soviet system attempted to suppress the spirit through coercion and ideological violence, the West increasingly risked dissolving it through technocratic relativism, consumerism, and the absolutization of individual desire.

Solzhenitsyn’s warnings about the West’s “loss of courage,” legalism, and spiritual exhaustion converge remarkably with Del Noce’s critique of a civilization that gradually replaces Truth with well-being, transcendence with technique, and freedom with the management of desires.

Preserving this speech in the best possible quality is more than an archival task: it is an act of cultural memory. We are still living inside the soft “totalitarianism of dissolution” that both Solzhenitsyn and Del Noce foresaw with extraordinary clarity.

Thank you for uploading this. Its voice may be even more urgent today than it was in 1978.

Thank you for uploading this. This is now officially the best quality version of the video online. Even though it's a mere 360p, at least it's not heavily pixelated or blurred and contains no VHS-tape-related distortions. I also appreciate that the ENTIRE TV program was uploaded, together with archive footage and interviews of Solzhenitsyn and others. Having said all this, is there any chance of capturing this in HD from the original film-reel? That would be so awesome. And a fine way to preserve the memory of this momentous occasion.
