My daughter was about 18, growing up here in British Columbia Lower Mainland…and only a few miles from Vancouver. She was training that one summer for a marathon taking place about a month later..by running her usual route around a local mountain lake with a well worn route around its shores. She would most often go alone, as she did on this day.

She recalls now her odd experience up there. As she ran…she became aware of a sudden silence that descended on the area she was running through. There was not a bird to be heard, not a leaf falling…not a sound of branches shimmering in the breeze. It was so odd that she momentarily stopped, knowing that sometimes this happens what a predator like a cougar is in the area. At the same time she started to feel a sudden sense of unexplainable feeling of dread. She also felt a very real feeling of being strangely cold to the point of shivering…despite it being June.

The oddest thing that happened though was her sudden conviction that she needed to get off the well worn, groomed trail and start to look for a “shortcut” through the thick growth along the edges of the path.
Her mind was almost in a panic as she went off the trail deeper and deeper..with an unknown destination in mind. By this point she had actually fallen several times as she made her way deeper into the thick. In severe panic now, she said she just couldn’t seem to help herself.

Just as she was losing control, she noticed a couple of distinct colors through the trees and oriented herself toward them. She made her way forward until only perhaps 30 feet away, she realized that it was a young family with a mom wearing a the red jacket..along with the dad…pushing a baby carriage in front of them.
She stumbled out of the bush and towards them…where she surprised them with her condition as well as her disjointed state of mind.

What she says that she distinctly remembered at that point was how the odd silence she initially experienced suddenly dissipated as did the intense cold she was feeling.
She then gladly followed the family out and off the trail.
To this day she cannot really explain what happened to her in there….and while she still runs and trains, she will never again run that trail alone.

I would consider myself a well seasoned outdoorsman.I've hiked over 4k miles in my life,in Colorado, and in Arizona. I've climbed 3 mountain peaks over 13k and 2 over 15k.
I've seen some absolutely crazy things in the forest, but nothing i had ever experienced up to that point, and up to this day...comes close to that evening and night. Having been in heavy Combat, in operation Just cause in Panama, Dec 89/ Jan 90 and trained in survival and evasion, counter insurgency and hand to hand combat, being an E5 Specialist...Nothing could surprise me or scare me. I was sooo very wrong.
I was actually chased by something that i couldn't see..i ran my literal a## off,a flat out dead run sprint for over a 1/4 mile, back to my camp.
This was back when I ran a 50 yard dash in 4.9 seconds. I was a 10% body fat having, 190lbs of Prime recently retired U.S Army combat veteran. Those
Heavy, fast long striding footsteps and heavy breathing that were thundering closely behind me...WERE NOT MY OWN. They were very close behind me the whole way, snapping twigs, everything.
Upon getting back to my camp and without any hesitation because i knew i was dead,..I spun my body around mid stride, still in motion, my pistol at my side, hip level so whoever or whatever couldn't knock my pistol out of my grip, hammer back and pointing upwards at where i was imagining the chest, midsetion would be..., ready to send whoever or whatever it was.. to an early grave..but there was nothing, no one. Nothing I had been trained for in the United States Army, had prepared me for that.
The forest was so quiet, you could have heard a pin drop. I was not seeing what all that training and real life experience had trained to see, deal with. I had to improvise on what and how I was going to survive.
I spent that entire night with my back plasterd so tightly into those 3 tree's, and a buncha snag ,with my .357 auto mag held so tightly in my hand, my knuckles were whilte. I didn't sleep a wink. I didn't even take the chance of crawling over on my hands and knee's to stoke the fire, and it was a Cold, Colorado night. I did, however, get the hell out there the next day, as soon as the sun had risen enough for me to see clearly.
This happened near the Valecito resivor,San Juan mountains/Rio Grande primative area. And to the troll accusing me of delusional thoughts or actions,...I wasn't carrying my pistol/cannon in my hand, muttering nonsensically, before or AFTER this, either !! but I was, however, hiking at a near break neck pace that put me 10 miles away from where that event took place by early afternoon, hoping like he'll it wasn't following me.
Retired Army combat,veteran,83-90.
Just a note to thee basement dwelling troll, who has never done anything except drink mountain dew, and play xbox, accusing me of being a delusional, gun toting psychopath..Don't criticize ANYONE because they have experienced more life, seen different things that take you outside of your comfort zone. If, for some reason, your smaller than average imagination, lack of motivation and drive that landed you in your mommy's basement, swilling mnt dew and playing xbox, as you ponder which new game you will buy at gamestop, and your all growed up manboy caloric intake swells as does your girth.....try and understand that there are those of us, that are polar opposite of you, we DO have drive, motivation and tenacity. We DON'T live in our mommy's basement, and we Definitely DON'T need or want your 2 cents worth of ANYTHING you have to offer. Please focus on either getting a career and moving out of your mommy's basement or, complete your next level of whatever xbox game you're playing now.

Why does "experienced" mean separating yourself from the group and getting lost? If you go with a group, stay with the group.

The Tootsie Roll wrapper being found should have been a much bigger indicator of what may have happened. Anyone who loves Mother Nature to the degree most of us do wouldn't throw that wrapper on the ground. Had James eaten that morsel, he would've put that wrapper in his pocket. The way he seemed to have abandoned that fire site where he had set up his meal to be, across the river and straight up a sketchy incline, tells me he was running from something or someone who came upon him very quickly and unexpectedly.

5:45 Melvin Nadell walked 50 yards to be abducted. Our own government made deals with extraterrestrials that we can be abducted in national parks. Missing 411 is a real deal conducted many years ago. If you go to a national park, do not go alone…even to the bathroom.

Spending a great deal of time hiking in the wilderness doesn’t automatically qualify someone as an “experienced” hiker.
Making prudent decisions and being well equipped and aware of weather and conditions and staying with your group, is what qualifies someone as experienced.
Going forward maybe don’t refer to them as “experienced”..unless they’ve earned the recognition..👍
