Wizards JUST announced a new book! <a href="https://amzn.to/2TNbDMA">https://amzn.to/2TNbDMA</a><br>Are we ready for another setting though? Almost like they're hedging their bets against Mercer's Wildemount. Interesting...

"If you can't be self-reflective without throwing a hissy-fit, that's not healthy for a better gaming environment"<br><br>Correction: That's not healthy for any human being in any situation or context in human history.

"Show, don't tell."<br><br>I feel like this is a very easy oversight when it comes to role play.<br>Just because you are sitting at a table and most information you'll share will be verbal doesn't mean your character has to express everything verbally. In fact, sometimes your character being silent might be more efficient.<br><br>I recently started a Ravnica campaign with a group of friends, and my character was this overly enthousiast optimist that always had a short, witty comment to make to lighten up the mood.<br><br>During our last session, some time after a deadly encounter against a group of anarchists, someone suddenly noticed that I had gone silent since the encounter :<br><br>"Are you alright ?<br>- I... I killed someone."<br><br>My group then realized I was actively avoiding to kill humanoid enemies since the begining, and never mentioned once that I didn't want to. But during the previous encounter, there was a "it's us or them" situation and my character got her first kill.<br><br>Because I never pointed at the fact that I was not willing to kill, because I stayed silent with an otherwise very cheerful character, because I let an other player asking about what was going on instead of imposing that part of my backstory, that one line hit everyone around the table so much harder than any monologue I could've made.

I had a guy in my game just last night hit me with "I've been playing this game for 20 years and I know how its supposed to work and maybe when you have my experience you'll know better." I started playing in 1975. It was with great pleasure that I informed this joker that, when he began playing 20 years ago, I'd already been playing for 25 years.

Pro tip, if you're about to cut somebody off, write it down

Addition to point 9: Players who berate other players for not meta-gaming. I've had the fighter yell at me because my paladin ran into danger to help his friend only to "discover" the enemies hit a lot harder. He spent several minutes complaining about my decisions <b>as a player</b> and I've never enjoyed D&D less than that session

The one I really have to admonish my party memebers on is advising other characters on what action to take in combat. I get they want to get the most bang for their buck, but I have a couple of very passive, newer players who will defer to the more seasoned ones if they're given the chance. Whether it's a move that's super effective or fails utterly, each time you do something, it's a learning opportunity, and I don't want players to take that away from others.

Players: Stop describing actions as an ability check. "I want to make an investigation check to...". Tell me what your character does, I will decide if a check is needed, and then I narrate the results.<br>[Edit] If I say "Make this check", you may then ask "would this ability or skill allow me to make the check using this proficiency instead?" Subtle but important difference.

"If what your character would do diminishes the fun of others, you made a bad character." -me (or maybe an r/D&D post that I didn't realise I stole.)

Bad habit for most tables I’ve been at....Stay off your phone/device unless it’s related to the game. It’s a social game but you want to ignore what’s going on and be on Facebook, text another person, etc...A quick text to someone at home is fine but c’mon, we all got together to play a game w each other. If find it just rude and is my #1 pet peeve of bad habits.
