  In Canada if you’re really passionate about a sport you’ll play in a league outside of school. School sports don’t really matter.

  I’m a Canadian that went to Sophomore year in US high school (ages ago). I played volleyball in Canada and also made the Volleyball team in the States. Very different experiences. In Canada, you practice, you compete, it’s fun. That's about it. In the US, making the team was considered a massive accomplishment and was supposed to become your primary focus (i.e. more than school). Many more hours of practice, compared to Canada. My focus was on school, and (unlike my classmates) actually completed homework reading and assignments, so when I realized I couldn’t keep up with both, and decided to quit the team (!!!) the volleyball coach responded like that was the most insane thing he had ever heard. Not supportive in the least. They were disgusted by my decision. In Canada, I played for fun. In the US, you played to win, to protect the pride of the school. You were like a soldier. Which brings me to the “mandatory pep rallies” for the football team during school hours and the cheerleaders (not really a thing in Canada) that would lead chants about going into battle.

  I&apos;m an old guy, but in high school athletics was more about participating than competing. &nbsp;Nobody cared if you were a star, they cared that you showed up and tried.<br>Also, the field in most of the country is covered in snow half the year, so indoor sports and fitness is a big focus.

  In Canada there are almost no shootings in highschools. &quot;Fewer shootings&quot; gives the wrong idea.

  Hockey is big in Canada; but in most instances it is not directly associated with the school systems.

  In Canada EDUCATION is why we go to school. Sports are secondary. We are taught that education is the key to adult success.

  To get into university or college, you use your transcripts which shows what you did in school

  We do have school bands. &nbsp;They usually sit in chairs with music stands in front of them. &nbsp;They don&apos;t wear uniforms or march. &nbsp;They don&apos;t make competition a big thing though there may be some competitions.

  The cafeteria system is completely different in Canada. It&apos;s your option to have it and you pay for it at point of sale. A lot of kids just pack their lunch

  In Canada we are taught world history and geography as well as other cultures. &nbsp; The world doesn&apos;t revolve around one country.

  In Canadian high school history class, we learn about OTHER countries, not just focusing on ourselves.

  We do hold and secure (lockdown) drills for wild animals ( bears, cougars, lynx, moose , etc.)
