Honestly, I find these systems usually work reasonably well as long as you don't delude yourself into believing it makes your car a hardcore off-roader.

This is easily the best explanation of a typical "AWD" system that I've seen. Thanks!

One misconception I hear a lot from car enthusiasts and automotive YouTubers is that these AWD systems are weak and not meant for off-roading. I've pushed my turbo diesel Jeep Compass through some pretty sketchy terrain, and it was always able to pull itself out.

Again, it can't be compared to a proper off-roader, but for weekend getaways to the mountains, deep snow, muddy trails, and other bad weather conditions, these AWD systems are excellent. They offer far more capability than many people give them credit for.

I burned up the clutch on my Escape AWD by driving a few miles with the factory compact spare tire on. Thanks for the effort of pulling the clutch pack. I always wanted to see how that works.

I quite like my Suzuki Grand Vitara AWD system. Full time awd, locking center diff, low range transfer case, effective stability/traction control that applies brake to a spinning wheel but does not cut the power and it can be turned off at slow speeds if needed.

Oh yeah, I have worked on these before. Lots of people tend to forget about changing the oil in these Haldex ripoffs, but so long as you keep on top of that, they hold up ok, and I haven't seen a whole lot of issues with them. Same can be said for Pathfinders in general, except, you know....CVT's. PCV valve hoses can be a problem to, especially in the first series of direct injection VQ's. But I'm waffling now. Great video man, loved the teardown.

PS: Forgot to mention, I worked on one of the newer Pathfinders and they don't have CVT's anymore. ZF torque converter on them. Looked very similar to those on some Honda's and Jeeps I have seen.

I prefer Hondas rendition as it can rear bias and torque vector

My next vehicle will likely be a RAV4 AWD. 99.9% of my driving will be on paved roads, or the odd gravel country lane. The 0.1% might be the trail to my hunting spot, which is not severely rutted or full of giant rocks. A RAV4 or CRV will do just fine in those circumstances.
