I once had a squirrel in my backyard who had only one ear. His left ear looked as if it had been torn off in a fight with another squirrel. I named him Vinny, for my favorite artist, Vincent van Gogh. I fed the backyard birds every day by scattering seed on the ground. Vinny would come and eat as I was finishing feeding. One day he came down the oak tree and got to my eye level and stopped, and just looked at me face to face for a bit before going to the stone path where I scattered seeds. He started doing that every day, stopping to look closely at me, and I realized he wasn’t afraid and was quietly communicating with me. After I realized that, the next day I held a nice big shelled pecan nut out to him and he took it from me. It thrilled me so much that I bought pecans just for him and every day he would take it from my hand and go off to eat it. We did this for several years, until one winter it was very snowy and icy and after that winter was over, he came a few times, but he looked feeble, like he was sick. I knew it was only a matter of time and before I knew it he was gone and never came back. I got a picture of him the last day I saw him. I have thought fondly of Vinny often over the years. He was my special little friendly squirrel and I still love him.

My mother remarried, and we moved to a new town. I was going through a lot emotionally… starting a new school, adjusting to a new life. A squirrel in the yard started coming around. I used to sit on the front porch and sometimes fall asleep there after school. I started feeding it. At first I would set the food on the railing and step away. Gradually I could hand feed her. Later she had babies. I fed them too. She actually brought them to me. My step father tried to pet her … and she bit him. Not just once but twice. She did not trust him… and I know she was feeding off of my emotions. I loved that squirrel. After that she only came around when I was alone out there. She meant a lot to me..

I have been surrounded by death and dying for the past several months; a friend's mother, a boyfriend from the '60s, my sister, and another old friend from long ago. At the end of March I put up a bird feeder outside my office window and within literally days a big gray squirrel climbed the Shepard's hook and began performing some of the silliest, most amusing, and sometimes hilarious movements to gain access to the bird seed. He makes eye contact with me and continues on his merry antics. I replaced the original bird feeder with a new one - one which The Squirrel could not invade. The Squirrel stared at me with baleful eyes and I could almost hear him asking why. I relocated the new feeder and returned the previous one within 24 hours. Sure enough, when I awoke this morning he was upside down chowing down. When he caught sight of me he paused and, once again, made direct and sustained eye contact, this time with happy eyes [if squirrels can actually make happy eyes]. We look for each other many times during the day and more often than not, there he is, raiding the bird feeder. So I just bought him his very own squirrel feeder, complete with purple umbrella. He gives me reason to smile despite all the sadness around me.

We rescued a baby grey squirrel years ago and bottle raised him. He had his own tiny doggie door but preferred to be indoors most of the time. If my husband wasn't home by 4:30 he would go pee in his recliner. My husband made a point of calling if he was going to be late so I would go put a towel in his chair. He knew my husband would have a pecan or some other nut in his pocket and Skamper expected it in a timely manner! Squirrels are so much smarter than most people give them credit and I believe they feel lonely and heartbroken too. Once I was in the hospital for 8 days and Skamper quit eating and would not let my husband pet him until I got home. The night I got home it was very late and my husband insisted I go out to the porch and talk to him. I called his name and he all but flew out of his nest he was so happy. True story!

Everything stated in this vid is spot-on. Squirrels are amazing little critters who definitely recognize humans who are good to them.

A couple of them, stare at me through the window, especially when the nuts are gone. But when i go out there a couple run for their lives still. 😂 i believe I'm being used.

I had a squirrel we named Alex. She showed up in my yard along with many others, to eat the corn from my deer feeder. I noticed she was different, not afraid. One day I offered her a pecan. She got about ten feet from me so I threw it to her and she retrieved it turned around and ate it. Then she wanted more. Then next one I held in my hand and to my surprise she came and got it. Over the next three years our relationship grew to the point she would get on my lap to get her pecans and let me pet her. There were times she would be gone for months between visits. Sometimes I would be running loud woodworking equipment and I would turn around to find out she was right behind me. It’s been over a year now and I’m afraid I’ve seen her for the last time. I really miss that relationship, the trust she showed me despite having two cats and a dog she would still seek me out. As a footnote, she would only take pecans from me. If I tried to slip a peanut in, she would throw it back at me. When I first started feeding her they were all pecans in the shell. Once I ran out and had to give her pecans with the shell removed. After that she only wanted pecans that were already out of the shell. I miss her dearly but have others that I am building a relationship with but none were as easy as Alex. I wonder how long she studied me that I just never noticed?

I love squirrels ❤️. I was feeding on old squirrel who looked scrawny, had a leg that had been broken and healed incorrectly and his poor tail was so straggly. He would take food directly from my hand, grapes, cherry’s and pecans. I named him Randy and he actually would respond and I always had something for him. He passed but I met another squirrel on its last legs and took care of him also.
