  Answer to the beginning question from someone who grew up in a culty environment, left, and then ended up in a second cult: people end up in cults exactly how people end up in abusive relationships. The leader(s) pretends to be someone they aren&apos;t, you get love bombed, and then the control and manipulation starts out super slow and insidiously. Frog in a slowly heating pot of water analogy comes to mind. By the time you realize you&apos;re not safe, it&apos;s also not safe to leave. Best case scenario? You lose your entire community, all your friends, your entire safety net, your job, your home, your spouse, your kids, etc. It means completely starting over. And we already know the worst case scenario due to how those scenarios tend to end up in the news.

  @kallmekris I accidentally started a cult once. The entire thing was a gag. It was meant to be an after school (College) comedy club pretending to be a religion. It was way over the top. My friend and I who started this whole thing would play characters that were nothing at all like our real selves. In short anyone with 2 brain cells could tell it was not serious. &nbsp;Unfortunately for us, a lot of college students only have 1 brain cell. We shut it down when we realized that some of the people didn&apos;t get it wasn&apos;t real.

  Hey, Kris, I was actually raised in a cult. The Bill Gothard homeschool cult, Institute in Basic Life Principles, specifically. I&apos;m a survivor. My parents were in it and all three of us, me and my two brothers, were indoctrinated into this cult and I managed to escape. If you ever wanna hear my story or do any research on IBLP, I&apos;m more than happy to share my experiences and my story. My parents were actually one of the &quot;meeting houses&quot; so we had other cult members over all the time for small groups and study sessions.

  I spent 21 years in a cult without realising that these things weren&apos;t normal. A couple of months after running away from my family, I spoke to some professionals and they told me that my family classed as a cult. I am lucky now to have 2 partners that are unteaching me what I learnt, teaching me what I need to know that I don&apos;t and genuinely making me so much happier.

  i was a homeless 18 year old escaping an abusive home when Love has Won was doing their live streams. I never saw one, but when I watched that HBO series recently, I realized that I could have very possibly fallen into her trap.

  My parents taught me to question people’s intentions and the reliability of information. They also taught me to question strangers, people in positions of power, people who I just have a bad feeling about and anyone else I don’t trust. It’s made me a little paranoid but it’s saved me a few time. Well worth it. All parents should teach their kids this.
