Born in Havelian, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, into a family of Kashmiri descent, Azmat grew up in Lahore’s Garhi Shahu and speaks Punjabi as his native language. His father, Nazir Ahmed Butt, was a businessman who died in 2013. Azmat went to Sydney, Australia, for higher studies but returned to Pakistan because of financial difficulties and completed his university education. He began his music career with the Lahore-based band Jupiters in 1986, performing covers of American pop and rock songs at small gigs. During his time with Jupiters, he wrote the song “Dosti,” which he later recorded with Junoon and which went on to gain national popularity. Ali Azmat joined Junoon in 1990 and became the band’s lead singer, helping establish its distinctive Sufi rock sound. Junoon released its debut album, Junoon*, followed by *Talaash*, which brought the band widespread recognition. The 1995 album *Inquilaab produced the iconic song “Jazba-e-Junoon,” which became a signature track for Junoon and was associated with Pakistan’s 1996 Cricket World Cup campaign. The band achieved further international success with the Sufi rock hit “Sayonee” from its 1997 album Azadi*. Junoon later released *Parvaaz in 1999, Ishq in 2001 and Dewaar in 2004, its final studio album. In 2001, Junoon became the first Pakistani band to perform at the United Nations General Assembly. After Junoon’s breakup, Azmat launched his solo career with Social Circus in 2005, followed by albums including Klashinkfolk*, *Josh-e-Junoon*, *Bum Phatta and Chalta Main Jaun*. His music also reached Bollywood, with Junoon’s “Garaj Baras” featured in the 2003 film *Paap*, while he later recorded “Yeh Jism Hai Toh Kya” and “Maula” for *Jism 2 in 2012. Beyond music, Ali Azmat has worked in television and Pakistani cinema, beginning his acting career with the Junoon telefilm Talaash in the 1990s and later appearing in films including Waar (2013) and The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022). Junoon reunited for a major concert in Karachi on December 25, 2018, following a 13-year gap, attracting thousands of fans. Azmat has also been involved in television projects, including Iqbal Ka Pakistan in 2008–2009, which focused on the philosophy of Allama Iqbal. Throughout his career, Junoon and Ali Azmat have received multiple awards and international recognitions. Junoon won the Best International Group award at the Channel V Awards in New Delhi in 1998 and the Best Rock Band award at the Indus Music Awards in 2004. The band’s album Azadi achieved triple-platinum status in India, while “Sayonee” topped MTV India and Channel V charts for more than two months. Junoon was also recognized for its contribution to peace and South Asian culture by organizations and media bodies including the BBC, UNESCO and the South Asian Journalists Association.
