Hey everyone! This video is getting traction again, so I wanted to hop on and cover 2 quick things. I'll be back with longform videos soon, just always prioritizing my busy coaching schedule :)

1) My original plan was to make a video fairly quickly after this one going more in-depth on mix. I'm finally getting around to that, but me not doing that left some confusion. Basically, mix functions almost like an extension of chest voice but with an acoustic and muscular shift. So, based on the info in the video, if you start in M1 (where TA activation is high and fold thickness is high), you're going to keep your TA activation relatively high and start adjusting your vowel. This is the gateway into mix. From there, the folds will begin to thin, but gradually, so there's not a clear "flip" into M2, and the TA itself stays more active the entire transition than it would if you were going to M2 right away. This means that mix isn't a distinct register of its own per se. What I was trying to say in the video is that I think mix feels more like chest for most singers. The subjective experience of it should be less like M2 than many people think.

2) If you're interested in vocal exercises / info on your own range to help you find your registers, I have 2 free guides on my website. I've had a lot of folks who prefer to learn on their own time get a lot of use out of these: https://www.warren-voice.com/guides-and-ebooks

This is an amazing explanation. I find the terms used by vocal teachers extremely confusing and unintuitive, and this video clarifies their meaning perfectly.

In every vocal lesson I’ve taken I’ve been told that I sing very “scientifically” a lot of awareness to the minuscule details to what’s going on in my larynx because I love the science and technical terms and related things. I love throat singing distortion and overtone singing. That being said, this is the greatest saga of singing technique explanation I’ve event watched, thank you for this masterpiece🙌

As someone who’s trying to better their singing more, THIS EXPLAINS A LOT EASILY.

It may be worth talking about inhale, growl, and subharmonic singing as different distortions too.

Also, it IS technically possible to mix different registers. Very recently I’ve managed to sing in head voice and vocal fry at the same time, creating a perfect fifth harmony.

This is a video I’ve been looking for for years but have never been able to find. FINALLY someone explaining the actual mechanisms by which different registers are created in the vocal cords and larynx. While more fantastical descriptions like “whining like a baby” and “feeling the resonance in your head” are helpful, they are not directly tied to the muscles we are actually using to accomplish that sound. This is invaluable; thank you.

I've never heard it explained this clearly before. I'd love to see videos that delve into each register and explain how they feel to sing, perhaps with examples of the sounds of the same notes sung in different registers (and maybe showing the effects of the way changes in sound source, airway resonator and vowels used can effect the richness of the tones). I'm pretty much a beginner and sing just by listening and then having a go, so I can't really tell when I'm singing in which register, or if I could make notes sound better if I were able to control which registers I'm using. Looking forward to more videos. :)

After watching over 285 vocal coaching/technique videos over the last 2-3 years, this is definitely in my top 5 now

Here's why this video is so great:

1. It's concise (actual lectures tend be 1-2 hours)

2. It provides helpful visual aids to understand the anatomy & physiology

3. It provides helpful audio clips demonstrating examples of the techniques

4. It cites academic sources which can be used by viewers interested in diving into the voice research literature
