Investigators uncovered the remains of two young children beneath a woman’s fur coat. Beside them were a lunchbox, a single woman’s shoe, a hatchet — and two child-sized leather flying helmets. Police believed the children had died years earlier, around 1947. A doctor identified them as a young boy and girl. He was wrong. Both children were boys. That single mistake shaped the investigation for the next forty-five years. Police searched school records, social-service files and missing-person reports for a brother and sister who had never existed, while the real boys remained unidentified. Their names were Derek D’Alton and David D’Alton. Derek was seven. David was six. They had lived in Kitsilano, attended Henry Hudson Elementary School, and disappeared from the records decades before anyone connected them to the children found in Stanley Park. Their own family believed they had been taken away by social services. The breakthrough began when DNA testing finally established that both children were male biological brothers with the same mother but different fathers. Decades later, investigative genetic genealogy allowed detectives to trace their DNA back through a family tree. At the same time, their great-niece Ally Brady had discovered photographs of two unfamiliar little boys in an old family album and begun searching for them herself.
