Bureaucrats everywhere keep falling into the same trap. "Emphasising critical thinking", "nurturing creativity" and "fostering independence" all look great on their powerpoint slides, but what they ignore is the fact that these are highly abstract abilities and fairly meaningless if they aren't grounded in actual competencies and mastery of the underlying subjects

We are failing the tests, scrap the tests. We’re failing to teach the curriculum, dump the curriculum…

It is pointless to teach "critical thinking" to people who lack the basic intellectual skills needed to assess the information they receive. That means literacy and numeracy.

When literacy is below the US, you know you've failed.

Only Wales could take on a curriculum that had already failed in Scotland!! Emperor's New Clothes.

Did anybody ask them HOW this system was meant to encourage critical thinking? it sounds like this minister has no idea what he's talking about.

When the person revising the curriculum says they "want to put their own slant on it" then is unable to answer a simple question, makes you realise children are in the wrong hands.

As well as ignoring the previous failures in Scotland and New Zealand, why didn’t they carry out a trial in one or a few schools before gambling with the education of the whole country?

As a teacher of 30 years, this so-called New Curriculum is a load of C***! What is it with Welsh politicians that they can't see the blinking obvious? It is almost a contrary type of thinking. Well England do that, well we will do something different because we can! Never mind the results are shameful, they all come out with the same old rhetoric. The National Curriculum in England was the best thing ever, it was in no way perfect, but it delivered the same curriculum to every school. I was in Primary, and by the end of Year 6, our children had studied all of the elements of the curriculum, for example, in History, they will all have covered Victorians, Tudors and Stuarts, Vikings and other invaders, Aztecs, Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greece, Saxons and so on. Those children will have been able to access that curriculum. When I first started teaching, there was no National Curriculum and it was topic based. So it went like this, 'hmmm, what do I feel like teaching? I know I will do Rainforests'. The idea was you were able to use this topic to teach maths, science whatever but if a child brought in a bird's nest that day, it was all change to study the life cycle of a bird. All very interesting but left children with vast gaps of knowledge as this lady has just stated. The English National Numeracy and Literacy Strategy were similarly extremely successful, for example, in Literacy a Year 4 child should know about myths, fables and legends etc.<br>I could go on but too much for a YouTube post. Wake up Wales, you are letting children down.

Education in Wales is finally so bad they can no longer blame it on poverty.

Speaking as an ex secondary school teacher, the bureaucrats are just morons who haven't a bloody clue about anything to do with teaching. They should keep their interfering noses out.

The Minister comes across as dangerously stubborn.
