I'm honestly not surprised about the baseball stuff, Japan loves baseball to the point they even did an anime style commercial for the baseball league.

Toners are usually watery while serum has a low viscosity, but is closer to a gel. Essence is just "thick water" if you will and is what is used to drench most sheet masks.
