I was the safety manager for Pueblo Army Depot where the Pl was maintained and the Pll final assembly was performed. I was very involved in the Pll program. I can tell you for a fact the it was deliberately designed to force the Soviets to the negotiation table. President Carter was going to negotiate the second stage away, a single stage Pll, for Soviet concessions. All that changed with Reagan, it was balls to the wall to field Pll as fast as possible to force the Soviets hand. We all knew it was a first strike weapon and that there was risk involved. I was present in Orlando when the first Pll was assembled and at the first Pll static fire demil under the INF treaty.

My mom was the head of QA at TACOM (Tank Automotive Command) in Warren, MI when the GLCM (Ground Launched Cruise Missile) was developed and deployed. She gave ma a GLCM belt buckle, which I still have. I always wondered why such an expensive system was junked. Now I know. Thumbs up.

My father was a printed circuit board and packaging designer for GoodYear AeroSpace Corporation. He converted engineers developmental designs into deliverable products, using various production constraints of the available technology. I recall him discussing Pershing 2 after it was pulled out of Europe. Terminal guidance and reduced CEP nearly made Nuclear weapons obsolete. You don't need a nuke, when you can fly through a window.

I found some of the Pershing II Warhead transport container tech manuals in a dumpster along with many other similar age manuals. One batch of parachute manuals I gave to the Army Reserve 12th Special forces group HQ collocated with the Reserve Unit I served in as an Instructor.

CEP is relevant for ALL surface to surface and air to surface weapons, not just missiles.

It’s VERY relevant in field artillery

I was in Pershing P1A, 1977-81, finishing up with the 1/81st FA in Neu Ulm , West Germany and returning to the civilian world working for a military contractor when one night working late and had my little Sony shortwave radio with me listening to Radio Moscow when the announcer said that that Neu Ulm was now an operational Pershing II site, this had to be 1984. Told my coworker about it and he didn't have the slightest idea of what I was talking about but it took me back a few years.
