Ten thousand men ran straight at an empire that outnumbered them 2-to-1 — with no cavalry of their own and no reinforcements coming. If that doesn't sound insane to you, you weren't paying attention. 👇
Would you have voted with Miltiades to attack, or waited for Sparta? Drop your answer below.

What makes Marathon immortal isn't the casualty ratio; it’s the fact that it shattered the psychological terror of the Achaemenid Empire.

As the historian Herodotus famously recorded: 'They were the first Greeks we know of to charge their enemy at a run, and the first to endure the sight of Median dress... Until then, the very name of the Medes struck terror into the Greeks.' Persian military doctrine relied on massive volleys of composite bow arrows to break enemy cohesion before finishing them with cavalry and infantry. Knowing this, the Athenian general Miltiades did something completely counterintuitive: he stretched his battle line thin in the center to match the Persian frontage, heavily reinforced his flanks, and ordered a full sprint (dromoi) through the final 150 yard archery kill zone. The Greeks closed the distance so rapidly that Persian archers barely got off a few ineffective volleys before getting crushed by heavy bronze. When the Athenian wings routed the Persian levies and wheeled inward to encircle the elite Persian center, the myth of Asian invincibility evaporated in the Aegean surf.
