This is the years before that including material most people have never heard at all. Before Digital Underground, before California, when he was a teenager in Baltimore calling himself MC New York. Then the move west, the Strictly Dope and Jungle Posse days, falling in with Shock G. He was already extraordinary. You can hear it in recordings made years before anyone was listening. This is the Pac who wrote "Brenda's Got a Baby" at twenty years old. Whose mother was a Black Panther who carried him through her own trial. Whose debut album got denounced by the sitting Vice President of the United States. Who put out Me Against the World from a prison cell and watched it debut at number one, the first artist ever to do that while incarcerated. And you can hear the thing that never resolved. Pac spent his whole career pulled between two people: the conscious, revolutionary voice his mother raised him to be, and the gangster the industry rewarded him for becoming. "Keep Ya Head Up" and "Holler If Ya Hear Me" came from the same man in the same years as "Definition Of A Thug N****." He never picked a side, never reconciled it, and never stopped fighting about it in public.
