I used to be like this kid — when I was being trained by the owner, I’d get so nervous about making mistakes that I’d forget what I was being taught. Later, I moved to another company and worked with a calm, easygoing gentleman. He told me, “Make mistakes to learn from them.” Then he left me there all by myself to work on the equipment and figure things out on my own. If I made a mistake, he’d step in and take over. That’s when I started learning much faster. Looking at that kid now — he seems nervous too. Let him handle things his own way; he’s already done it a few times.

Derek is a keeper..love it. He can take some criticism and ball busting. Good job mike, for making him feel good after the pilot stayed lit.

He’s just a kid, but in time he’s going to realize the attitude is the charge that comes with putting him on so much game at such a young age.

I love how you talk to people! Sometimes in this industry, we also need to be the Customer’s therapist!

So many people are complaining about the interaction between you and the new guy. I actually think I see why you are talking to him and it’s more like confidence building than anything else.
What’s going to happen when he is in the truck and working on a job?
If he doesn’t have any skills or his confidence is low he will not be able to finish the job.
This hazing ritual has purpose, if he was confident about the problem with unscrewing that thermocouple by hand, he could have won $100 by challenging you to unscrew by hand.
Obviously you weren’t able to do it either.
I finally get it, you aren’t being mean about testing the apprentice but it’s important that they are not glossing over when you are teaching them.
Bravo!
