[뉴스초점] 트럼프, 韓 대미투자 발표…알래스카 LNG 포함 / 연합뉴스TV (YonhapnewsTV)

[Guest: Kim Kwang-seok, Adjunct Professor at Hanyang University] President Trump officially announced South Korea's investment plans in the U.S. early this morning. The plan includes investment in the Alaska LNG project, which was previously under negotiation because its business feasibility had not been sufficiently verified. Since the plan includes projects that our government has not yet finalized, controversy seems inevitable going forward. We will examine this in detail with Kim Kwang-seok, an adjunct professor at Hanyang University. [Question 1] President Trump personally announced the project details from the Oval Office. In addition to the Texas gas-fired power plant, which our government disclosed as its "No. 1 investment," the announcement included the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Alaska and the construction of eight large nuclear power plants. What are your thoughts on the announcement? [Question 2] President Trump stated that he was pleased to announce one of the largest energy infrastructure investments in U.S. history, but our government has maintained a cautious stance. Regarding the Alaska LNG development project, wasn't it previously classified as a subject for future negotiation because its business feasibility had not been sufficiently verified? The government has consistently maintained the position that it would review participation in the Alaska LNG project based on 'commercial rationality.' [Question 3] President Trump spoke as if the Alaska liquefied natural gas project was already decided, but there is a significant gap in opinion between South Korea and the U.S. Ultimately, should we view President Trump's hasty announcement of the investment in the Alaska LNG project as being due to the midterm elections? [Question 4] Although President Trump announced the investment project in the U.S., there are still domestic procedures remaining. An MOU is likely to be signed only after these procedures. What are the remaining variables? [Question 5] It seems the key will be how the investment amount and project scale are coordinated through detailed future consultations with the U.S. government. However, there are concerns that we might lose the initiative in negotiating terms due to President Trump's political situation or this preemptive announcement. [Question 5-1] Can cooperation in the shipbuilding sector also be used as leverage in negotiations? [Question 6] The government previously clarified its principle that the actual scale of investment execution would not exceed the $200 billion limit of the U.S. Investment Fund. Looking at today's announcement, it appears that the amount will not exceed $200 billion.
