I’ve had a corded phone with me since the seventies, it has always been the backup in power outages. Now the phone companies (Verizon bought mine) are pulling out the copper lines and putting in fiber optics, so that all phones will run through cell towers, and we have to buy a special box that uses batteries to have access. And we will be responsible for replacing the twelve batteries it uses. I don’t even have a cell phone. Am I angry much about this? Ohhh, you bet.

A landline phone is no good if you don't have phone service and a number for it.

    12. Books:
Not just playing cards, but also things like books to while away the hours will be needed.
Books require no electricity, unlike movies and most music. And paperbacks don't weigh all that much. When the power grid collapsed for a couple of days due very severe thunderstorms, the ability to read the books I had on hand was a great relief.
If you have young children with you, you should include coloring books, as well as the crayons to go along with them.

13. Musical instruments:
Acoustic guitars, banjos, mandolins, and fiddles would be great to have on hand, especially if they're a regular part of your life. You could lead your family in singalongs (perhaps including your neighborhood to help keep nerves from fraying).
There are also small, easily played instruments, like the harmonica, recorder, 6-hole pendant ocarina, 17-key kalimba, and even plastic kazoos. It would also be a good idea to have songbooks specifically for these small instruments that not only have sheet music in them, but also usually have directions on how to play them. Even better, such songbooks are only about the size of a magazine.

14. Shadow puppets:
For this, all you need is your hands, a light source, and a blank wall or sheet attached to the wall. Even better, you can find a free book online about making shadow puppets. You can print the book before TSHTF to have on hand. When I taught my school's K-5 Hands-on Science Lab, and it was time for 1st grade to learn about the unit on Light & Shadows, I had the kids put together this book (I stapled it for them). Then they got to practice making shadow puppets at the projection board at the front of the class. They had a great time!

Just a few more ideas to have at the ready for when the grid goes down for an extended period of time.

Add a good pair of leather gloves. Better to avoid the inevitable cuts on the hands, than to use the super glue. And they'll also prevent blisters.

This is a really good over view. It is not selling you any thing that is expensive and promising some thing. This is the kind of video that should be taken very seriously. There are very few vlogers on youtube that make such videos. Every one else is trying to sell you some thing.

Most phones, even "landlines" do not run on twisted copper pair anymore which had low voltage running over them from the central office which had generator backups. That's why back in the day if you lost power, you still had phones. Now, many companies use fiber which requires power on both ends of the line which is why you have a battery back up, but that will only last a short time.
