Speaking as a knitter/crocheter/cross-stitcher: the back of a cross-stitch exists to hide away all your yarn sins. If you can't see it, it doesn't exist 🤫<br>Taking the Disney tax into consideration, the price doesn't seem too bad. But I'd probably spend that $25 on a decent cross-stitch kit that's a bit higher quality

Definitely should have instructions included in the first box. When cross stitching your thread should be a lot shorter and we would normally split the stands of thread.

For cross stitching you don't want the thread super long. Normally 18 inches or so is the recommended length, that way you don't struggle so much.
