So, this song was written during the Falklands conflict, and my dad was there. I was young and never really understood what war was, but I do remember it on the telly and getting letters (blueys) from him whilst he was away. Fast forward and I was serving and was ready to deploy to the Iraq(2nd) war in 2003. I visited the family in Scotland and I remember the questions from my my mum, showing her maternal worry. But my dad, just sat there and listened. When my mum had left the room, he just looked at me and just said keep your head down and chin up. When I returned, and visited it was the same again, mum asking allsorts and dad just sat there listening. And when we were together he just looked over and we shared a silent moment, he knew what I knew and I knew what he knew....nothing needed to be said. I'll never forget it. And at his funeral, this is what we played for him, he was a huge dire straits fan, as I am now. Will always have a place in my heart. Thank you for covering this song :) Love your work.

Anyone arguing here over Falklands vs. Malvinas or UK/US vs. Argentina is completely missing the point of the song. The Brothers In Arms referred to are the soldiers, sailors, and airmen and women of both sides, not one or the other. “We’re fools to make war on our brothers in arms.” Fighting the war again in the comments to this video is more folly.

Vietnam 1967-68 here. I was the only survivor of my squad during a firefight at Khe Sanh. When I returned to the US, I realized I had to live my life for my brothers in arms. I'm nearing the end of my day now. I hope I did a good job.

This song always hits hard. Lots of people can make a guitar sing, but only a few like Knopfler and Gilmour can make it cry.

The guitar is the lead vocal in this song. The singing serves as a narrator.

As a veteran serving in the mid 80's this song hit so hard then. Now, 40 years later it is no less beautiful and brutal. To all my fellow brothers in arms, you are loved and of tremendous value. Thank you for your service

This is a prime example of how Mark's guitar often carries the melody and his voice just tells the story. I've heard him say that he recognized early on that his vocal range was never going to be what other lead singers brought to the table, so he focused on making up for that by making sure his playing could compensate for that. And I think it does - his guitar playing is some of the most emotionally connected I've ever heard. Many of their songs take on a call and response format where he vocalizes a part and his guitar responds. I would not change a thing about this song, it is perfect the way it is.

I watched a live concert of Dire Straits in the Waldbühne, Berlin, Germany , July 22nd 1992. The Waldbühne is open air auditorium not far from the 1936 Olympic Stadium. When they played Brothers in Arms it was pitch black, pouring down rain with a real thunderstorm and lightning as a backdrop to the stage. Everyone got absolutely drenched but it was phenomenal. I and many others cried. It was as if the spiritual world itself was orchestrating and doing the backdrop to this song. An unforgetable moment, an unforgetable concert.
