You nailed it when you said "he had so much passion" Well its a true and heart breaking story of why he wrote this song. Its about his mother left him with his father at a young age and never returned and started a new family. he still tours and sings it live just like he did decades ago. he kept holding on wishing his mother would return

The whole "Blue Eyed Soul" genre of music was exceptional. This and many others are still in rotation today. This was some of the best music ever created.

Mick Hucknall (lead singer) wrote this song at age 17 but didn't come up with the chorus until he was 24 when he started Simply Red.

I remember the first time I ever heard this in the 80s. I was traveling outside louisville ky, and had my young daughter and son with me. The sun was setting, I had the windows down, nice evening breeze. The two kids were asleep, and as I listened to this, I looked over at them and thought, this is my whole world right here. I felt blessed and wealthy beyond measure right then. Have lost my son, and part of the world crashed around me. Everytime I hear this song I am transported back to that night.
