On April 5, 1989, a mummified body was discovered in a tomb in Dalseong-gun, Daegu. Along with fingernails and hair, 172 letters were also found... It was the first time such a large number of letters had been discovered all at once! Whose fingernails and hair were buried alongside the body, and why were they buried with it? And what stories were hidden within these numerous letters? ■ Why Did Gwak Ju and His Wife Have to Live Apart? The husband who wrote the letters, Gwak Ju, was a member of the Hyeonpung Gwak clan and exchanged news with his wife, Ha, through letters. However, why did the two, as a married couple, feel the need to write letters? Gwak Ju had a son with his first wife. However, that son was around the same age as his second wife, Ha. To maintain harmony in his family, Gwak-ju built a separate house and lived apart from his wife, allowing them to exchange news through letters. ■ 172 Letters That Clearly Reveal the Lifestyle of the Era These 172 letters reveal not only private stories but also the lifestyle of that era in its entirety. Through the table settings and attire used when welcoming guests, one can glimpse the hospitality culture of the noble families of that time. Furthermore, artifacts were unearthed from the tomb that allow us to speculate on the appearance of Lady Ha; based on the clothing found inside the tomb, we attempt to reconstruct what Lady Ha looked like during her lifetime. ■ The Life of a Joseon Scholar Then, what kind of person was Gwak-ju? In the letters he sent on his way to take the civil service examination, he appears as a deeply filial son concerned about his father's illness. He also displays the image of a head of the household who meticulously attends to every major and minor family matter, as well as a caring side that loves his wife and children. Furthermore, these letters reveal much about the lives of scholars during the Joseon Dynasty. ■ As long as you are comfortable, that is all that matters; do not worry about the son. The couple, Gwak Ju and his wife, had a total of four sons and five daughters. The letters Gwak Ju sent while his wife was in labor clearly captured the husband's anxiety. From the part where he offered to brew the medicine himself, to the way he comforted his wife—who was constantly worried about giving birth to another daughter—we can see just how profound his love for her was. We also examine the child-rearing methods of Joseon noble families as revealed through these letters. ※ This video is [HD History Special - Time Capsule from 400 Years Ago, 172 Letters in a Grave], which aired on July 21, 2006. #Grave #Artifact #TimeCapsule This is the official KBS documentary channel.
