In the early 1900s a great great uncle of mine was seal hunting with younger members of his Inupiaq village. The village is about halfway up the coast of Alaska and is one of the western most points of mainland Alaska. As the group was on the ice it began to break up. The younger members of the hunting party were able to leap and jump and make it back to shore but my great great uncle was older and unable to make the jumps back to shore so he stayed on the ice instead of risking a fall into the Arctic waters. It is tradition that hunters hang their spare mukluks(fur boots) near the entrance of their homes. If the mukluks continue to swing you know the traveller is still alive because this signifies that they are still walking. If they stop swinging the person has stopped walking because they have died. The hunting party thought my great great uncle was lost since he was trapped on ice in the ocean but when they returned to the village his mukluks were still swinging. Seven years later he finally returned to the village. After being trapped on the ice he found himself in Russia. It took seven years to finally find his way home and supposedly his mukluks never stopped swinging so his family knew he was alive.

fun fact: relocated crocodiles ALWAYS find their way back where they came from. recorded instances show crocs relocated over a hundred miles made their way back to the exact spot where they were captured. took a month or so but they made it, and every croc with a tracking device did this. so that poor village is surely enduring the same monster all over again sense they didnt kill it when they had the chance.

Study was done on crocodiles to see if relocation works and it does NOT work- they will always return to their hunting spot even if it takes them no ths after being dropped off on the other side of the country. Only time relocation does work is when they're kept in captivity

They don't have saltwater crocs in Uganda, or anywhere else in contiguous Africa. This is the story of Osama, the largest Nile croc confirmed in Uganda. He became breeding stock for the fashion industry after his capture. The most recent info i could find lists him as alive in 2021 at around 75 years old.

That first one was almost immediately obvious, but using the word "placid" to describe the lake is what truly gave it away for me. I immediately pictured Betty White feeding the cow to that croc in "Lake Placid."
