  One of the most interesting coincidences of history to me is that another battle of annihilation using a double envelopment tactic, that of Stalingrad, also had a losing commander named Paulus.

  A kind of irony of this battle is that after the last battle the Roman&apos;s lost to Hannibal they wanted to just fight him in a conventional kind of fight and didn&apos;t want to get caught in one of his traps. However because Hannibal already knew this he created a situation were he would allow the Romans to think they were fighting the kind of battle they wanted to fight but once they moved into the position he wanted them to be, they would be in basically the same situation that the last Roman army was in that lost to them.<br><br>Im a nutshell, what Hannibal did was create what is known as a &quot;killbox&quot; where your enemy can&apos;t move anywhere without having to first fight and push away enemy forces that are already there. &nbsp;Obviously the only way to create a killbox is to position your own forces alround all four sides of your enemy&apos;s position. Needless to say, it is a given that any time a soldier gets stuck in one life quickly turns into a living hell until they can eacape it.
