I think Bamaiyi planned a coup within a coup, he played 3 faces. If the coup was successful, he would also dispose Diya. He already had his people in charge. If the coup fails, then he played along Abacha. Bamaiyi was the wisest of them all, he played everyone.

Even though Abacha was paranoid, I think there was a coup. Diya may not hv initiated it.

As a small boy in those heady days but a careful observer, I knew there were plots to remove Gen Abacha. Diya was heavily involved, n not only did Gen Adisa confess it, Diya's CSO Major Seun Fadipe made total confession of their plot to kill Major Al Mustapha to pave way for success of d coup. Even after all that, Gen Abacha's love for Diya didn't die, he refused to execute him despite pressures. Diya owed Abacha duty of telling d truth especially after Abacha's death but he did not. They are both gone now, n heaven will settle them.
