I was given a big bin full of acrylic yarn by a lady who became ill and gave up crocheting. There were multiple colors and I tend not to use acrylic that often, but I didn’t want her yarn to go to waste. I had recently bought a round knitting machine but it was really just a novelty. I threaded it up with some of the acrylic and off I went. I literally “cranked out” double thickness hats until I had used up all that colorful yarn. My daughter was making up winter kits for the homeless (toothpaste, soap, socks, etc.) and we were able to add the hats to many of them.

I’m an advanced knitter here in western Canada. In between more difficult patterns I make 8” sq dish cloths in cotton or the plain vanilla socks. Last year I went on a Princess cruise to Hawaii and back from Vancouver. The activity coordinator had set up a “knitters and Natters group” for us that met from 9:30am to 10:30am each morning of the 16 day cruise except the 4 port days. This was amazing. I helped other people knit their projects and also made a cardigan for my grand daughter. Knitting across the Pacific Ocean, I would do that again in a minute.

I haven't knit a Ranunculus because I don't like knitting and wearing top down round yoke jumpers. I like seamed jumpers, knit in four parts. They are not 'in vogue' at the moment but the nice thing about knitting patterns is that they don't care whether they are 'in vogue' or not, they just sit in a book or magazine and wait to be knitted

Love your video and you! I live i British Columbia, Canada and we could not suffer our winters without a hat which we call a toque! Cheers.

You now have another follower from British Columbia. My mom was a top tier knitter who could whip up a wardrobe. My father still has all the sweaters she made, even the ones she begged him to toss because they were falling apart. She "graduated" this life in 2019. I think she is going to enjoy your content beside me.

I'm a first time viewer, although long-time knitter & crocheter. Your bit about granny squares reminded me of my mother's beautiful bedspread made up of 4 x 4 squares crocheted of ecru cotton thread in a popcorn stitch. She would complete one square during out one-hour trip to grandma's house. This project took some years but when completed it graced her bed for many years. Remembering her making these lovely squares brought me to tears!

Yes, yes, yes, socks! My grandmother taught me to knit when I was four. She'd cast on and I'd knit the top of the sock...probably many weeks...she'd turn the heel...and I'd knit again to the toe where she'd take over. When I left home at 17, I didn't know the essential of heel and toe. Uh oh. She wrote it out and labored for several years until I could knit in my sleep. I worked on a TV show, much time off camera. I'd knit a pair of socks a week. Socks, go to knitting. Knitting all the grandkids scarves and hats for Xmas on big needles, bulky yarn now.

It always makes me smile when someone mentions the sophie scarf.<br>My first project 50 years ago was the rolled edge scarf/neckerchief, that my mum taught me, no written pattern then.
