Ten years ago, a friend in the midst of a conversation said, "find something people don't have time to do anymore and you're rich." Scrapping is a derivative. People will pay you to take their scrap just to have one less thing to worry about.

I've been scrapping for years and my best advice is this.
1: Know some maintenance workers that work for apartment complexes. Its a great way to get brass and copper generally for free.
2: Its always worth it to take air conditioners apart.
And 3: Most lawnmowers I found are perfectly sellable and an easy way to make 25 to 35 bucks

Amazing video. Solid info. #4 is my favorite tip. Look clean and look the part, be polite, be respectful of the areas you visit and watch the scrap flow to you.

I'm just starting out, on the side, and my new favorite scrap yard not only showed me what classifies as what, but even gave me a tour of the non-ferrous area.

Flexibility is the key. One time something might be easy the next not. So being able to recognize which is which comes with time and experience. Remember if your not making mistakes your not doing anything.

As long as I've been scrapping, around 8 years, I've enjoyed these types of videos you produce and I can always learn something new. Your summaries are the best for beginners, especially. While I draw the line differently than you do, your perspective is always appreciated.

Great stuff, Thub! I've been scavenging for maybe 3-4 years now, and by far the most satisfying thing has been getting to know the metals by look and feel (and magnetism!) through practice. Like, I knew the facts, but putting your hands on it every day is the only way to really KNOW it, right? Anyhow, I'm just picking for melting/casting materials, not $$$, so I feel good leaving all the steel and other heavy stuff for the dedicated guys and gals who are trying to eek out a living in the alleys of Chicago. I've gotten to know a lot of them, and I have a ton of respect for their hustle. I'll always be good to my fellow alley rats/pandas, and I always leave it better than I found it :D

I started scrapping after watching your videos. I only scrap copper and do quite well. My trick for finding a copper is the estate or garage sale. I consistently find little piles of copper that the previous owner squirreled away. Also quite common are bags of copper fittings and couplings. Look up in the rafters for length of copper tubing. The value doesn't even register for most owners and you generally get it thrown in if you're getting something else or charge you a couple of bucks and a quizzical look at the most. You can also find odd ball lots, like I once found 80 lbs of copper engraving plates. Love the content... and I still think there's a drinking game tied to every time you see a Tim Horton's coffee cup in the dumpster.
