Narwhals are already strange as far as whales go, they have a massive unicorn horn that is a single tusk

In certain areas of North America, wolves and coyotes have interbred, due to reduced populations contributing to a lack of available breeding partners. Could be happening among beluga and narwhal populations.

There are many fertile hybrids. Even a few mules have been known to reproduce. Its not common of course, likely due to cross-over events during either meiosis or mitosis: when these events take place in hybrids, it can often lead to genes being misaligned and disabled when recombining. But when hybrids are fertile (when it does occur) it is more likely that the female is fertile and the male of the hybrid isn't. My uncle occasionally breeds snakes and has gotten quite a few fertile hybrids of certain species of king snakes but nearly always its the female.

It is also true that the closer the species are, the more likely the hybrids will be fertile.

That is how new species get started. It fills a different ecological niche by feeding in a way neither parent does. Only a few may be fertile, but if the adaptations are advantageous more will survive to breed. Eventually it will become a separate species.

Well, today is the first I've heard of a narluga. Fascinating. I hope more sightings of these genetic hybrids are forthcoming. Thanks for enlightening us on this most unique creature.

I just watched a video about Dogxim in Brazil. It's a hybrid of a domestic dog and a Pampas fox. The Pampas fox is not actually a fox. It looks like a fox, but it's a canid. It was very interesting. I'm surprised more animals don't breed with others outside their species, but still within their species group.
