Hanmi Semiconductor originated from Hanmi Mold, established in 1980 by founder Kwak No-kwon in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. Having honed his semiconductor process and equipment skills for 13 years and 6 months at Motorola Korea, he localized the production of the "cavity bar," a core component of semiconductor packaging molds that was entirely dependent on imports at the time. Subsequently, he expanded the business into automation equipment and vision placement, maintaining the number one global market share in these equipment sectors since 2004. In 2011, Hanmi Semiconductor filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Secron, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. In 2012, the court recognized Secron's patent infringement and ordered a ban on the production and sale of the equipment, as well as damages of approximately 2.18 billion won. However, this was not a complete victory where the full claimed amount was recognized, but rather a partial victory for the plaintiff. The company began developing TC bonders used in HBM production around 2010 and supplied a dual TC bonder, jointly developed with SK Hynix, to mass production lines in 2017. According to market research firm Tech Insights, Hanmi Semiconductor recorded a 71.2% market share in the global HBM TC bonder market based on cumulative sales for the third quarter of 2025. In 2025, the company received the Top Supplier award from Micron of the United States. Although performance plummeted in the first quarter of 2026 with sales of 50.9 billion won and an operating profit of 8.456 billion won, the company achieved its highest quarterly sales since its founding in the second quarter, recording 251.1 billion won in sales and 130.3 billion won in operating profit.
