I have been breeding betta for 10 years. I never really use plants because I felt like it's harder for the male to dance with her. Breeding is very easy for me, it is just the caring for the frys that is a little complicated. One reason they eat their eggs is because the eggs weren't fertilized. Also for me, I only feed the pair 1 or 2 times a day for conditioning, so it teaches the male not to be hungry. Your other male that doesn't build a nice bubble west, what you can do is scoop up from another betta with a nice bubble nest and introduce it to the male betta with the bad bubble nest and eventually he will learn how to build his bubble nest better. Just some tips and tricks for you.

I fed my avatar black star betta male live black worms through the process of tending the fry to keep him full so he wouldn't eat his babies. He turned out to be a great dad at only 5 months old.

Just did this myself 2 weeks ago. Moved and counted them today ended up with 428 fry

This type of video takes a lot of time and effort and seeing the full process not broken up into a bunch of shorts or 5 minute videos is really appreciated. Good Job!

Loved the video. Please do a follow up video when the babies are fully grown. Breed more! I always enjoy these videos.

In my experience I think having the two males near each other while spawning is stressing them out they can clearly see each other through those containers and I feel like thats the problem when I breed bettas I put the containers in black bags to block out the other pairs so the males won't get stressing seeing each other and eat their eggs or babies

I would have added a divider between the two nesting pods so the fish can't see each other.

I like keeping my tubs on seedling warming mats that keep the bettas at 80 F (American). It’s so true how you have to figure out which couples are compatible. AND the most BEAUTIFUL babies can come from the ugliest fish😂

Please for the love of god...to anyone trying to breed bettas I'm begging you to do it responsibly and try to improve the health of these fish. No accusations aimed at this guy, just to clarify. But I had petsmart bettas from 20 years ago live well past 3 years whereas now it doesn't matter where I buy them, I'm lucky if I get a full year max. These guys feel so fragile now :c

Hi so, I have been breeding bettas for 15 years of which half of that was show bettas. Please take my comment as constructive criticism. You are right that inexperienced males often eat eggs or make shitty bubble nests. But I can also see that your fish are not looking optimal. To begin, both of the fish from the yellow pair have spoonhead (a dip/wedge above their head). This is a dominant trait and will breed through and get worse every generation. I would not breed fish with this trait, it seems obvious you are breeding them for their color and size but that's not the only thing you should look for. Also, a lot of your fish (even the b-roll you're showing of multipe bettas) have rough looking fins. I can see new growth, so no active infections but it is clear they have been nipped by themselves or other fish. Yes, bettas will nip during spawning and fins might get damaged, but it is not good to have them looking like that before the attempted breeding, high chance of infections due to more stress and nipping. Also, trying to breed fish over and over week after week is an insane amount of stress and costs and extreme amount of resources, especially for the female to create all those eggs and trying to stay safe from the male, it's exhausting for a female. With my show bettas, if a breeding attempt fails, I wait at least about 3-4 weeks before I try again. It's not just about creating the eggs and doing the spawning itself. You want both fish to have some "saved up" energy/resources (because they are also not being fed whilst in the breeding tub). They need some spare energy. If you breed them back to back so soon after every attempt, the resources will drain and breeding is very stressfull for fish. The chances of them getting sick and/or have decreased life expectancy and infected fins (from nipping) go up, which is unethical in my opinion. When breeding bettas, I personally aim for highest possible ethics, because we are already playing god of nature with breeding them.

So in short, make sure the fish have better traits, no (slightly) crooked spines/spoonhead. Have healthy and full grown fins and take more time to heal and recuperate between spawns.
