I bought WAY too many products while I was figuring out my routine, and I learned that you can donate them! I sent mine to Project Beauty Share, which takes products that are at least 75% full (with some exceptions for sanitary reasons) and distributes them to shelters and other orgs. I know some other folks have donated them directly to womens' shelters, etc. My stylist also said that the local high school's cosmetology program could use them.

Also: Thing 4 bothers me the most because the super high definition influencer look is the hardest to maintain. I'm lucky that a fluffier look looks better on me, since that evolves much more gracefully. It develops more frizz and loosens every day, but it's way less noticeable in a "turbulent cloud" than in "shiny ribbon curls". I get 5 good (but different) days with no refreshing - I just use a wide toothed comb every morning and dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner as needed.

I think part of the reason why the super high definition look is the influencer norm is BECAUSE it's not realistic. Not everyone's hair can produce that look, and even if you achieve it, it's a ridiculous amount of work to maintain. So if you can be convinced that that look is what everyone should aspire to and anyone can easily do it, then you will keep consuming content to figure out what you're "doing wrong" when you struggle with it. It's a variation of "steal your self esteem so they can sell it back to you" advertising, except nobody has to do it intentionally - the algorithm will automatically favor content that feeds that cycle just because it produces more engagement.

I love when my curls are poppin but honestly its soooo much work, and even then I can do the same routine and get different results. It's so wild to see the overconsumption in so many communities

Thank you for being honest.
Ladies, I’m old.
Eat healthy.
Sleep.
Drink water.
Work out.
Become a confident,kind, thoughtful person.
Real, long term beauty starts inside and the ravages of time will never take that away.
Find a few good cheap products that work for your hair. And a routine that takes little time.
Time and money are too important to waste.

Some people's jobs are to work on their hair, or their makeup, or their skin, or their abs or glutes or whatever (same goes for having literally hundreds of plants, or perfectly manicured nails at all times, or a perfect vintage wardrobe). And that's fine if that's what they're into and they can make a living at it, good for them!
The problem is exactly that people see it and start to think it's normal or that there's something wrong with them if they don't do the same things or achieve the same results as someone whose job it is to focus on, and then show off, these aspects of their lives, while for most of us, it's just one more thing to handle.

I'm not fucking up my neck doing the bowl method. I have back problems and looking at that routine made me immediately see the problem it could be for people's necks.

Also, there's a massive difference between fine curly hair and coarse curly hair. Mine is fine, I have a decent amount, but if I used more than 1 or 2 styling products, it would look hilarious - greasy, nasty, foul. 😅 Oh, and washing at least every 2nd day is a must for fine hair, I don’t care what anyone says. My hair is "normal," not oily or dry, but it looks best washed every day. Every 2nd day, I can get away with, but that's it.

some infuencers act like they are trying to "fix" their curls (aka having no frizz, no different textures, mega shine, etc.)

I'm tired of people saying/thinking every curly look should be the same. No! We all have unique patterns, etc. That's the wonderful thing about curly hair!

I have 2A wavy hair, and I tried the whole wavy/curly routines. I spent lots of money on products, I used special shampoos, I tried the diffuser, special sprays, mousses, etc. And I hated it. I hated having my hair run my life, and I lived in Atlanta where it would rain every day in the summer which would mess up the curls. If I needed to put at hat on - curls ruined. Once I set my style for the day, that was how it had to stay. I think my hair is super fine and can't hold styles well. So, I went back to just using a widetooth comb or finger combing, and normal shampoo/conditioner every other day, and embracing a bit of frizz b/c now I live on the coastal southern US, and my hair has never been happier. I had it past my waist and NO split ends at all. So... its okay to not have the picture perfect curls, especially if those curls will rarely survive putting a hoodie on.

I never refresh my hair. If is too bad, it’s better to wash it and style it again. And thank you for your honest content!
