  I think the present form of the Maxwell Equations were formalized by Heaviside. Maxwell formulation was using Quarternions and consisted of 20 related equations. Heaviside used vector notation and simplified it, but insisted on calling them Maxwell&apos;s Equations. He&apos;s a forgotten figure now, but shouldn&apos;t be.

In fact, he&apos;d been intensely looking for connections between electricity and magnetism, he was just struggling to interpret and make sense of his results. Initially, he thought the magnetic field radiated outwards, and later determined correctly that it was actually circular around the wire, as we would suspect today from the right-hand rule of the Biot-Savart law or Ampère&apos;s law.

  Maxwell built on Weber&apos;s work. One of Weber&apos;s most consequential contributions was the measurement of the ratio between electrostatic and electromagnetic units of charge. Weber&apos;s work on this ratio indicated it was approximately equal to the speed of light, a result that would later become extremely important for Maxwell&apos;s electromagnetic theory. Indeed, in 1846, Weber discovered that a characteristic velocity, nearly equal to the speed of light, was a significant constant in electrodynamics, and Maxwell accepted this discovery in his theory of the electromagnetic field in 1861--62, using it as important evidence for his electromagnetic theory of light.

  This is an important topic for young up and coming physicists. <br><br>Of the 4 known forces in the universe, one, and only 1, is considered completely solved.<br><br>And that is: Electromagnetism. <br>It is completely described by Maxwell&apos;s Equations.

  Nice video Dan. The thing about the current spiralling down the wire is important. Maxwell talked about the &quot;screw&quot; nature of electromagnetism. So did Minkowski, but it&apos;s no longer in the textbooks.
