She Survived the Unthinkable… Then Her Neighbor Did THIS

I received a message online from a woman named Leslie, and what I was reading stopped me in my tracks. Her story almost didn't seem real—until she sent me pictures. Once I saw them, I couldn't believe what this woman had survived. I happened to have an opening in my schedule, so I made the decision to drive up there and see if anyone would answer the door. When I arrived, there were cars in the driveway, but after knocking, I wasn't sure anyone was going to answer. I waited for what felt like forever, and then the door finally opened. There was Leslie, sitting in a wheelchair, and in that moment I quickly remembered exactly why we do what we do. As we started talking, I learned more about her incredible story. Years earlier, Leslie survived a devastating bonfire accident that burned nearly 80% of her body. Her life changed in an instant, and the road since then has been anything but easy. Over the years, her backyard became completely overgrown. What might look like "just a messy yard" to someone driving by had become something Leslie simply couldn't take care of on her own, and she hadn't been able to truly enjoy the property or get outside like she once could for nearly four years. But someone looking from the outside didn't know any of that. Leslie had even received a letter criticizing the condition of her property and calling it trash. Whoever sent it had no idea what she had been through or why the property looked the way it did. That's when this became about much more than mowing grass or clearing brush. A cleanup like this could have cost thousands of dollars, but we weren't going to charge Leslie a dime. We went to work clearing years of overgrowth, cutting through thick vines and brush, and taking back a backyard that had become almost unusable. Our goal wasn't simply to make the property look better—we wanted to give Leslie a piece of her life back. What happened throughout this cleanup, and Leslie's reaction to what we were able to accomplish, is something I don't think I'll ever forget. Sometimes it's easy to look at someone's house, yard, or situation and make assumptions, but you truly never know what someone is going through behind closed doors.
