El barco que naufragó por hacer el trabajo de otro: la Gran Grifón

⚓ In the autumn of 1588, the Grand Griffon, flagship of the Great Armada's merchant ships, ran aground on Fair Isle, a tiny island between the Orkney and Shetland Islands. Some 300 men spent weeks on an island that barely had enough food for its own inhabitants. We examine the ships that kept the sailing fleets running. We begin with logistics: a sailor's daily ration and what a ship consumed. Then we take apart the merchant ship, a wide, flat-bottomed vessel designed to carry a lot with a small crew, and the Dutch filibot, whose shape is often explained by a toll in the Sound. We see how the 18th-century navy moved timbers, masts, and cannons, and what it meant to arm a ship in a flute. At the other extreme is the packet boat: the Maritime Mail service, established in 1764, sailing from A Coruña to Havana and the Río de la Plata, with sleek hulls, ample sail, and a clear policy regarding official correspondence. We end with the compromise that no hull could avoid: either carry a heavy load or travel at high speed. ⏱ Contents 00:00 The Great Griffon at Fair Isle 00:55 Part I · Wars Are Waged with Biscuits 02:44 Part II · The Urca 04:59 Part III · The Hull That Drawn a Tax 06:53 Part IV · The King's Urcas 08:54 Part V · The Packet Ship 11:25 Part VI · Information as Cargo 14:03 Sources 📜 What is Known and What is Reconstruction: The shipwreck of the Great Griffon and the stay of its crew at Fair Isle are documented and studied by underwater archaeology. The creation of the Maritime Mail in 1764 and its routes from A Coruña are based on historical sources. The relationship between the shape of the filibot and the toll of the Sund is a widely held explanation that historians debate, and this is how it's presented in the video. Ration figures are approximate and varied depending on the era and regulations. The images are reconstructions generated with artificial intelligence. 📚 Sources • Martin, C. “Full Fathom Five: Wrecks of the Spanish Armada” • Parker, G. and Martin, C. “The Spanish Armada” • Fernández Duro, C. “Spanish Armada” • Naval Museum of Madrid 🎬 The Royal Shipyard — the engineering of the age of sail. ⚓ What surprised you most: the Grand Grifón, the filibot, or the Maritime Mail?
