2.5 years later and this is still the best written and produced explanation on the social affects of AI

I left a comment here when I was younger, defending AI, saying the tech isn't an issue<br><br>I take it all back

<i>"The irony that we're automating the production of art instead of the jobs everybody hates shouldn't be lost on us."</i> the fact that I and all my cynicism didn't cath this 'til you said it, leaves me feeling all different kinds of bad

it took me about 10 years to convince my oil painter grandma that digital art is not "telling the computer whatever you want to paint and having it generate the painting in mere seconds" only to witness the emergence of "AI art"

The term "Artificial Intelligence" has been thoroughly ruined by LLMs and Image-Generators. I can't talk about the behaviour of units in a game without people thinking now that there are hooked up to ChatGPT somehow.

I came across your video two years ago, and I want to say a formal "thank you". <br>This video was one of the major reasons that made me quit academia, and it's because I agree with every single point. <br>I entered academia 5 years ago because I love computer hardware and architecture. At the time it was fun and exciting to make GeMM, quantization or CONV run a bit faster. Seeing them approach the theoretical maximum throughput (i.e., the flat part of the roofline) gave me tangible sense of achievement and pride. I liked my work. I genuinely thought DL was the future (and I still do, but in a less optimistic way). <br>But after several years, I started to hate what's being run on the hardware I studied, researched and improved on. It was all used for meaningless monetization and abuse. The internet didn't become a better and more creative place out of it. Jobs were replaced by degraded mimics of human behavior. <br>The whole AI scene disgusts me.

"It's democratizing art and writing! Now everyone can do it!" Everyone already could, buddy, get a pencil and a piece of paper and start experimenting! You probably won't be good right away, but nobody is, it takes practice.

The word "everypony" out of absolutely fucking nowhere hit me like a truck.

What's funny is that since the release of this video, people generated so much AI images that the AI itself started training on its own data, making results worse again - amazing.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MUEXGaxFDA&t=1194">19:54</a><br>I'm reminded of the observation that the problem with building a bear-proof container is that the smartest bears and the dumbest humans overlap. We're getting (or already at) a point where this is true for AI.
