I'd like a podcast called the Top 14 Digest to put aside bias in favour of UBB and not limit comment on their chief rivals, the 4xback to back champions, to rancorous complaint. There were a number of interesting features of the ST x MHR game last Sunday which you didn't cover. Montpellier had rotated as so often happens, but ST also fielded an extraordinary team due to injuries: a number of (fantastic) young players and three props on the bench, leading Merkler to be brought on as prop then switched to the second line when young Rapetti came on
secondly, there was Aldegheri's comments at the pre-match press conference when asked about the future. He's been playing with fellow front rowers Cyril Baille and Julien Marchand since he was 15 years old, more than half his life. He doesn't like to think too much about the future when he'll have to stop playing with them, he's enjoying it while it lasts. I can't think of another club where a similar group of players have played so long together. And it's not just these three, Ramos, Cros, Jelonch, Dupont have been playing at the club for years, and the Ntamack brothers must have come up through the grades at ST since the age of 5.
You harp on about ST's salary cap, but what about the amazing academy which helps create the fantastic young players who step in during the doublon and injuries, and results in such a stable, close-knit team. All teams have to train young people, so what's the difference between ST and the other clubs rich in resources like UBB?
Another thing that creates depth is the ability of ST players to cover different positions, on Sunday, Merkler in the second row, If you're an international full back expect to play all over the place, and players of any position will step into the scrum half role when Dupont or Graou is trapped under a heap of bodies. Dupont also sometimes plays at 10, and I think that there's been talk of him playing centre. Mauvaka champs at the bit not to be limited to hooker. There's a certain amount of versatility at other clubs, but not on the scale of ST.
Talking of Dupont, if a walk in try is in front of him, what do you want him to do, make it more difficult!! He made a major contribution to the victory, not only two tries and a try assist, but drawing away the attention of the defence for Theo Ntamack's try and making a major contribution to the build up of other tries. I'm sure if he'd been playing for UBB you'd have praised him to the skies!
