The entire concept of apocalypse is so attractive to me. It absolutely needs a second take. In fact one of mu dream games is a turn based xcom game in which you start just as a mere criminal or low agent in a future megalopolis, establish your base in some abandoned building, then work yourself up until you're raiding corporations using your own private aircraft while also fighting a major threat. Kinda like a mix between xpiratez and apocalypse.

The destructable battlemap is so fun. My favourite example of it was a battle early-game. Green-as-grass squad in an early investigation mission of a sewer/recycle facility. Its the Aliens turn. A brainsucker scuttles in off- screen, beelining for a pointman. Overwatch fire keeps missing, alien getting closer and closer. One of the last remaining shots misses so bad it hits a large pipe on the ceiling/floor overhead. It collapses, landing on the brainsucker and squashing it. Pointman saved by dumb luck.

I personally think that Apocalypse is so ambitious that it almost deserves a second attempt. I'm hoping the Open Apocalypse project can really make the game shine

One thing I forgot to mention, is how the Cityscape will change depending on difficulty, making XCOM’s mission far more challenging.
For example on Superhuman the Cult has a massive presence across the city.

I worked at MPS during the Xcom era. Some things you might find interesting. TFTD was not meant to be a sequel; it was supposed to be an Expansion pack. The issue was that MPS was running low on money and someone made the calculation that sequels sell more than expansions so thus it was 'sold' as a sequel. What you said is true; TFTD is basically a "copy paste" of Xcom with diff graphics, unit stats and a few new features. I went to the internal reveal meeting for Xcom 3 and quite a few people (including myself) left feeling deflated. The art style was polarizing to say the least (I personally hated it) and the real-time mode was clearly "trend chasing" because games like Dune, C&C and Warcraft were super hot at the time. I wasnt assigned to X3, so I don't know much about its dev process but the final game was awful in my view and I loved the first 2. The maps look desolate and incomplete, as if they didnt have time to add objects to make them look like real spaces. The other games, like Enforcer were naked attempts to cash in on the Xcom brand. MPS was far from alone here though (Anyone for Descent: Freespace or Descent to Undermountain?)

One other thing: It was not green-lit, but there was a prototype of Xcom/TFTD remade as a superhero game. I saw this myself. It wasnt much; an empty map grid with characters throwing fireballs and icebolts at one another- just a playable concept. Superhero games at that point were 'the kiss of death' so it never made it any further.

Ngl I love Apocalypse. Replayed it awhile back and still hits hard, wish we had some kind of X-Piratez size mod for it. I love the full destruction in the ship fights or just lining all your soldiers up and just waiting and not moving and watching the masses of bullets/lasers fly everywhere. It's weird but fun and has some solid bones on it that modders could make something awesome from. Like X-Piratez having your pirate ships flying around the city blowing shit up would be rad as hell. I also loved how it turned the tables and you were the one invading the aliens, flying into their world and blowing up their buildings and invading them. That'd also be awesome in a mod.

Apocalypse is a rough diamant. I would love to see a remaster.

I played this a lot, and I think I might have gotten through it once. The high end gear was pretty rad, I think there were even teleporters. But most of the time I played this, I spent my time raiding gang slums in my flying power armor to steal sci fi drugs, and sell them. I really got a kick out of that. Then when I'd made too many people mad to continue playing, I would attack the city with my fleet of hover cars, and flying bikes.

My first xcom experience was the Apoc demo, and suffice to say, I was utterly confused by what the hell was going on as an 8 yo kid.
But one thing that always stuck with me was the environment destruction, Seeing an entire building collapsing after an explosion was so cool, especially back in the 90s.
Can't wait for OpenApoc to be decently playable.

From what I recall, the reason the aliens look that way in game is because Microprose had them outsource the creation of those graphics to a studio that didn't understand the isometric perspective, and made them using clay, causing them to look silly.
