Best reason to keep living: "Too many of your enemies would delight in your death." Turlough really was a unique companion.

I love this regeneration. Purely because he doesn’t know whether or not he’ll regenerate. Really hammers home the Doctor’s courage and kindness

It's really fascinating seeing the how the regenerations were handled before the golden glow became standard.

I think that the Fifth Doctor turned out to be the bravest Doctor of them all. I mean he gave his life to save a woman he barely knew! And he wasn't even sure if he would regenerate, as far as he is concerned that could've been it.

I've always loved how the voices of past companions eventually merge into an incomprehensible, creepy, droning sound - like a distant murmur - while the Master cackles in delight. Gives it a very uncomfortable edge.

Everything about "The Caves of Androzani" is brilliant. I loved how everything goes wrong for the Fifth Doctor right from the beginning and the entire story is spent racing to save the life of someone he just met. Having his final thought ("Adric?") then be about the companion he failed to save was a writing masterstroke from the incredible Robert Holmes.

I love how the flashbacks of each character swirling around represents his contemplation. The companions representing why he doesn't want to die, but the threat of The Master showing why he NEEDS to live.

An ominous end for an often overlooked and underrated Doctor. Peter Davison might’ve had a mixed bag of a tenure as the Fifth Doctor, but when he delivered, he did so in spectacular fashion. Castrovalva, Earthshock, Enlightenment, and Planet of Fire being excellent examples.

That said, The Caves of Androzani is the crown jewel and it’s often ranked as one of the best Doctor Who stories for good reason. Spot on writing, memorable villains, and Peter Davison’s exceptionally strong performance throughout races it towards a regeneration that almost immediately feels off the moment it starts. And despite what people will say about Collin Baker, his first lines of dialogue do sell the fact that something unusual has occurred from the regeneration and that Peri might’ve just left the world of danger on Androzani, only to find herself potentially in more trouble with the very man who saved her.
