As far as I remember when we where in the eu and there was freedom of movement you could just get in a boat/plane/train with a ticket and your ID turn up in the uk and claim asylum. Now because you can’t do that the only real way in is illegally. So now they don’t have ID and we have no idea who is who and that’s where the real issue is. As now many are not fleeing persecution, they’re fleeing prosecution.

The reason there has never been a legal route to claim asylum is because the UK does not consider that anyone can simply just arrive in the UK and claim asylum.

Around 69,840 to 93,500 asylum applications are recorded annually, showing a slight decrease compared to prior peak periods....<br>Between 1 January and 27 September 2026, a total of 19,135 people crossed the English Channel to the UK in small boats..... explain difference w/o mentioning other routes
