Trent Reznor's reaction to this cover says it all. After hearing it, Trent said something along the lines of "this isn't my song anymore, it belongs to Cash. It turns out that I wrote it for him and didn't ever know it"

The NIN and Cash versions do not compete; they complement each other. One from the viewpoint of a younger man with the self awareness to understand the mistakes he's made; the other from an older man who looks back on the mistakes he's made.<br><br>Having both versions is truly remarkable. We are blessed to hear them both.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails called it an “unbelievably powerful piece of work.” <br>“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow,” Reznor said. “[I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.”

I absolutely love the way they left the voice as is. Didn't try to over-produce or autotune away the way he sang. His voice is showing age, a bit weak, off pitch, trembling....but it's the most beautiful thing ever.

I met him once. I was about 14 and didn't understand the concept of not approaching famous people going about their day, sorry. But he was in the grocery store, and I recognized him and was so excited that I asked him for an autograph on the back of my grocery receipt. He was so very kind, and asked me how I was doing. He was buying strawberry yogurt and red grapes. I'll never forget that moment, and I have his signature framed on my wall.
