Laika (The First to Orbit)<br>​Laika is the dog most people remember. She was a stray from Moscow who became the first living creature to orbit the Earth in 1957 aboard Sputnik 2.<br>​Is she alive? No. Sadly, Laika’s mission was a &quot;one-way trip.&quot; At the time, technology to bring a spacecraft back safely hadn&apos;t been perfected yet.<br>​What happened? She died just a few hours into the flight due to overheating and stress. For decades, the Soviet government claimed she lived for several days, but the truth wasn&apos;t revealed until 2002.<br>​2. Belka and Strelka (The Survivors)<br>​If you’re thinking of a dog that actually made it back, it’s likely one of these two. In 1960, they spent a day in orbit and returned to Earth safely.<br>​Are they alive? No, they both passed away of old age in the late 1960s.<br>​Their Legacy: They lived very comfortable lives as celebrities after their flight. Strelka even had a litter of puppies!
