Depending on certain factors, he could get out in 3 or 4 months. Possibly better than a 5 year probation, while paying fees and risking doing the time anyway for some minor thing. In his situation and with no kids I might have done the same

The fees are the least of the judge's worries because she doesn't have to pay them. A lot of that probation crap is VERY expensive. I earn six figures, and I'm not sure I could afford them. While ethics and morals are the main reasons, that's one reason I don't commit crimes. I can't afford them.
