Asian Status goes behind the palace walls of imperial China: the empresses, consorts, concubines, eunuchs and maids who lived inside the Forbidden City and the courts before it. What they ate, what they were allowed to wear, how they were chosen, how they rose, and how many of them disappeared. Every episode is built from court records, memoirs, museum collections and excavation reports. When a finding is seventy years old, we say so.
