Appalachia Before Fifteen towns a video. Every one of them was real, every one of them is on a map somewhere, and every one of them has a date of death and something that killed it. Not ghost stories. Not ruin porn. A railroad pulled out. An interstate went around. A company sold the houses out from under the people who lived in them. A dam closed its gates and a valley went under. We count down from fifteen to one through West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, western Pennsylvania and western North Carolina. For each town: where it sat in the mountains, what it was worth when it was working, how people actually lived there, the year it ended and what did it — and what you will find standing there today if you drive out and look. Where the record is thin, we say so. Where sources disagree on a year or a number, you will hear both. If your family came off one of these places, leave the name in the comments. That is how these lists get corrected.
