I'm Ray. I've been driving for the better part of twenty years — most of it long haul, most of it alone, and a fair amount of it in places I'd have avoided if somebody had bothered to tell me. Nobody hands you the real education at orientation. You learn it in parking lots at two in the morning, from drivers who've been out here longer than you, and from the mistakes that cost you money before they cost you anything worse. Which lots are worth stopping at and which ones you roll past. Which loads look good on paper and eat your week. What detention is actually worth and how to get paid it. How to eat and sleep out here like a man who intends to still be doing this at sixty. Here I talk plain about the road. The stops, the freight, the money, and the parts of this job nobody puts in a recruiting video. No sponsors. No chrome-and-sunset nonsense. Just what I learned the hard way, told the way I'd tell it in the fuel island line.
