These mountains raised people who knew things. Not book things. The kind of knowing that kept a family fed through a winter with no power, told a man what the sky was about to do, and taught a child which six rules you never break in the woods after dark. Nobody wrote any of it down. It lived in people's hands and their mouths, and it died with them, over and over, all the way up and down these hills. I tell it here before the last of it goes. Appalachian folklore and the old rules. The history nobody teaches. The things that happen out in the timber that never made the news. I give you the story the way it was handed to me, and then I tell you what is actually underneath it, because the old people were right far more often than anybody gives them credit for. I will always tell you which part is fact, which part is argued over, and which part is just handed down. That matters to me. New stories every day. Hollis Holler
